Vieques
Vieques is a small island off the coast of Puerto Rico, and a unique natural environment. Long used as a military testing ground by the US Armed forces, the US navy left the island in 2002 under political pressure. The island is largely uninhabited, and is currently the target of interest by developers for the tourist market. It is an important moment to capture the environmental diversity present on the island, including two bioluminescent bays with a high concentration of dinoflagellates. A continually growing resource, this field guide will serve students and researchers working on the island, providing a place to document and learn about the species found there. One of the goals of this site is to help to promote the conservation of the island by fostering an appreciation of its biodiversity.
